About The Artist

Jamaican-born artist, illustrator, author and playwright, Errol Lloyd, came to London in 1963 where he studied Law, but made his life in art and writing.

His commissioned work includes busts of Sir Alexander Bustamante the past Prime Minister of Jamaica, poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, the cricketer Gary Sobers, the writer and historian C.L.R. James, the politician Lord Pitt and the writer and publisher John La Rose. Errol’s paintings have been widely exhibited. He remains the only black writer and illustrator to have been runner-up for both the presitigious Kate Greenaway and Carnegie Medals.

Errol has written over 20 children’s books and was Highly Commended for the Kate Greenway Medal (1973) for his illustrations of My Brother Sean by Petronella Breinburg, the first British children’s book featuring a Black main character. His Young Adults’ novel, Many Rivers to Cross (1995), was nominated for the Carnegie Medal.

A central figure of the Caribbean Artists Movement (CAM), 1966 -1972, he went on to produce many book cover designs and posters for the newly established London Black-owned publishing companies, New Beacon Books and Bogle L’Ouverture Publications and Allison & Busby. For 4 years he ran the Minorities’ Arts Advisory Service (MAAS) and served as Art Editor of their inter-cultural magazine, Artrage.

Errol’s portrait hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.
