Poetry Rising – An Evening Where Words Come Alive

Join us for the second in a new series of events at KRL –  Poetry Rising

Kensal Rise poet Chrys Salt MBE will present Alan Franks — poet, writer and songwriter.

Alan’s poetry readings will be followed by Open Mic Floor spots…the Fickle Tupperware Bowl of Fate awaits! Bring a poem, a song a monologue – anything that fits into 2 minutes.

Alan Franks’s poems have won many national and international awards, including that given to him by the Wilfred Owen Association in 2014. He was a feature writer for The Times for more than thirty years, during which time he was twice shortlisted for a British Press Award. Going Over, his story of a man walking across England to confront his estranged father, won the British Novella Award. His many plays include Looking At Lucian, with Henry Goodman starring as the artist Lucian Freud, and The Mother Tongue, starring Prunella Scales and Gwen Taylor. Having started out in revue at Oxford and the Edinburgh Fringe, he has occasionally returned to acting, with appearances for the Richmond-based company Two Shillings and Sixpence. He has written some 100 songs, many of which have been recorded and performed by the singers Patty Vetta and the late Charlotte Moore. The  playwright Sir Tom Stoppard declared himself an admirer of their output.

Chrys Salt has performed her poetry across the UK and internationally. She has published four full collections and five pamphlets, had her poems published in magazines and anthologies and broadcast on Radio 3 and 4. She also writes theatre and radio plays, features and documentaries and has written seven books for actors (Methuen Drama). She runs performance and skills development workshops for writers and performers, and was Artistic Director of The Bakehouse from 2006 to 2024, an arts venue in SW Scotland, and Literature Convener for BIG LIT: The Stewartry Book Festival in South West Scotland. Chrys was awarded an MBE in The Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2014 for Services to Arts.
